Ramon Abreu, Jr., Senior
Since the time I joined the Restorative Justice League, I can say my mindset changed for the better. From being a hothead and not caring about the situations I would get myself into with my group of friends, to now thinking two steps forward and having self-control, Restorative Justice gave me a perspective on what it is like being on the peace-making side of the situation because problems should not be dealt with violence. Restorative Justice taught me to not fight with violence but speak your mind and find a solution to the problem in a peaceful manner. Restorative Justice taught me how to deal with my problems and actions, but also to help our fellow peers and teachers here at SDC. Restorative Justice members strive to make our school environment safe and productive.

Two years ago, Restorative Justice expanded out to the student body. This group of students was not chosen for their academic success, perfect attendance, or for always handling situations at the best of their ability. They were chosen for their experience in life, the leadership role they play, and the influence the have over the rest of the students at SDC. Including these kinds of students to handle issues and instill the practice of Restorative Justice has made a huge impact on the way our community is able to function. A lot more students feel more comfortable with coming to ask for a circle before a problem escalates. The Youth Development Office has become a safe haven for our students to talk their issues out and express their emotions. These circles have gained some type of respect, whatever happens in these circles, stay in the circles, and almost all of the time these problems are resolved after the circles. Overall our school is more relaxed and cordial.
